In North Texas, the choice between artificial turf and natural grass comes down to your specific yard. Choose turf for deep shade, dog areas, small or hard-to-mow spaces, and pool surrounds, where real grass constantly fails. Choose natural grass (sod) for big sunny lawns where it thrives and where you want the lowest up-front cost. Here is the honest comparison so you do not overspend on the wrong one.
Where artificial turf wins
- Shade. Nothing real grows well under mature live oaks or between close houses. Turf does not need sun.
- Dogs. No mud, no dead urine spots, no holes (see pet turf).
- Small / awkward spaces. Courtyards, side yards, strips too small to mow.
- Water and time. No mowing, no watering, no fertilizing. Big savings over years.
- Always green, even in August and drought restrictions.
Where natural grass (sod) wins
- Up-front cost. Sod is much cheaper to install than turf per square foot (see sod cost).
- Big sunny yards. Bermuda and Zoysia thrive in full DFW sun and look fantastic.
- Heat underfoot. Real grass stays cooler than turf in direct summer sun.
- The natural feel and the cooling effect of a living lawn.
The honest math
Turf costs more on day one but stops the recurring spend on water, mowing, and reseeding. On a problem yard (shade, dogs, tiny space), it pays back and saves the constant frustration. On a large, healthy, sunny lawn, sod is the better value and the better surface. Many DFW homes do both: sod for the open lawn, turf for the dog run or shaded side yard.
