Questions We Hear Every Week

Sod FAQ.

How long until I can walk on new sod?

Stay off for the first 10–14 days while roots establish. Light foot traffic is fine after two weeks; heavy use after about 4 weeks.

How much water does new sod need?

Water 2–3 times a day for the first 2 weeks (short 10–15 minute cycles), then taper down as roots take hold. We leave you with a simple watering schedule after install.

What's the best time of year to install sod in Texas?

Late March through May is the sweet spot for Bermuda and Zoysia — warm soil, spring rain, full growing season ahead. We install through early fall when conditions allow.

Do you remove the old grass?

Yes. Prep, removal, and haul-away are included. We also grade the soil so the new sod sits flush with walkways, beds, and driveways.

How long until the new sod is fully established?

Roots establish in 2-4 weeks if the watering schedule is followed. Full visual maturity (knit-together, deep color, even growth) by 60-90 days. Texas summer heat shortens establishment when the grass is watered correctly.

What grass types work best in North Texas?

Bermuda is the North Texas standard — fast-growing, heat-tolerant, great for full-sun yards. Zoysia handles partial shade better and feels softer. St. Augustine works for shadier yards. We help you pick the right one for your specific yard.

Should my sprinkler system be checked before new sod goes in?

Yes, and it is the most skipped step. New sod fails fastest in the spots the sprinklers miss, so run every zone before install day and fix broken heads or patchy coverage first. No irrigation? Plan on hand-watering short cycles 2 to 3 times a day for the first two weeks. When we walk your yard for the estimate, mention anything you know is broken and we'll factor it into the plan.

What if the new sod struggles after installation?

Nearly every struggling new lawn comes down to one of three things: not enough water in the first two weeks, sun grass laid in a shady spot, or poor soil contact from rushed prep. We prevent the last two by matching the grass to your yard's actual sunlight at the estimate and grading before we lay. The first one is yours: follow the watering schedule we leave you. If a section still looks off in those first weeks, text us a photo and we'll tell you what to adjust.

Do I need to be home for the installation?

No. As long as the crew can reach the yard and the water, most installs happen while you're at work. We confirm the details before install day, haul away the old grass, and clean up before we leave. Plenty of customers just come home to a new lawn.
