How Much Does Sod Installation Cost in DFW?

How Much Does Sod Installation Cost in DFW? — Loera's Landscaping DFW blog

So you're standing in the yard looking at the brown patches, the bare spots where the dog runs, the stuff that just never came back after last summer, and you're wondering what it would actually cost to start over. Fair question. The honest answer: most full-yard sod jobs around Dallas-Fort Worth run between $1,200 and $14,000 installed. That's a big spread, I know. Stick with me and I'll walk you through what moves that number, because once you get it, the price stops feeling like a mystery.

First, what you're actually paying for

When we hand you a number, it's for the whole thing, start to finish, in one visit. We pull out the old dead grass, haul it off, prep and grade the dirt, lay the fresh sod, and roll it so it actually grabs the soil. No "oh, and disposal is extra" phone call later. The biggest thing driving your price is simply how much yard you've got. But the part that decides whether you end up with a lawn or a regret is what happens to the soil before the sod ever touches it.

Why our dirt makes this complicated

Here's the thing nobody tells you up front: most of us out here are sitting on heavy black clay. Brutal stuff. If somebody just rolls sod over unprepped clay and drives off, that grass is going to fight to root, and you'll be calling somebody back in a month wondering why it's dying. Doing it right, grading it and loosening that clay where it needs it, costs a little more going in. That's not us padding the bill. That's the difference between a lawn that's still green next August and one you're tearing out again.

What makes one yard cost more than the next

A few things move the needle:

  • Size. More yard, more sod, more labor. Simple.
  • The grass you pick. Bermuda, Palisades Zoysia, and St. Augustine all price out a little differently.
  • How much prep it needs. Thick old turf to rip out, a grade that's off, drainage that pools? That adds up.
  • How we get to it. A wide-open front yard is easier than a tight backyard with no gate to fit equipment through.

How to get a real number for your yard

I'll be straight with you: the only number that means anything is the one we give after walking your actual yard. We measure it, look at your dirt and how the water moves, help you land on the right grass, and get you a fixed quote, usually within a couple of days. And the price we say is the price. We're a family crew out of Carrollton and we've been laying Bermuda and Zoysia on DFW yards since 2010. If sod's the right call for your place, we'll tell you. If it isn't, we'll tell you that too.
