How Long Does Artificial Turf Last? Maintenance in DFW — Loera's Landscaping DFW blog

Quality artificial turf lasts about 15 to 20 years in DFW, and the upkeep is light: rinse it, brush it occasionally, and keep it clear of debris. It is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance, and the few things you do (or skip) decide whether you reach the long end of that range. Here is the simple routine.

The basic maintenance routine

  • Rinse periodically to wash off dust and, for pet areas, urine. More often in summer.
  • Brush the high-traffic lanes occasionally to keep the blades standing up (a stiff push broom or power brush).
  • Clear debris like leaves and twigs so the surface drains and does not stain.
  • Pick up after pets as normal; rinse the spot.
  • Occasional enzyme rinse on pet turf to keep it fresh.

That is the whole job. No mowing, no watering, no fertilizing, no weeds (an occasional weed at the edges pulls right out).

What shortens turf's life

  • A bad base. If the aggregate base was thin or poorly graded, the turf ripples, sinks, and holds water. This is the top failure, and it is an install problem, not a product problem.
  • Cheap, low-density turf that mats down and will not brush back up.
  • Heavy dragging of furniture or sharp objects that tear blades or backing.
  • Reflected heat from west-facing windows (low-e glass) can warp turf in a narrow spot; we plan around it.

Why the base matters most

Everything about turf's lifespan traces back to what is under it. On our expansive clay, a properly excavated, compacted, well-drained base is what keeps turf flat and lasting two decades. See how we build it in the complete guide to synthetic turf in DFW.
