How Long Does a Wood Fence Last in Texas? — Loera's Landscaping DFW blog

A well-built, well-maintained cedar fence lasts about 15 to 20 years in Texas. A cheaply built or neglected one can fail in under ten. The gap comes down to three things: how the posts were set, the quality of the wood, and whether the fence gets stained on schedule. Here is what shortens a fence's life here and how to land on the long end of that range.

What kills fences early in Texas

  • Heaving posts. Our expansive clay swells and shrinks, and posts not set deep in concrete with drainage work loose. This is the number one reason fences lean and fail.
  • Our sun. Intense UV dries and grays unprotected wood, leading to cracking and warping.
  • Moisture cycles. Heavy rain followed by long dry spells makes wood swell and shrink until it cups and splits.
  • Cheap wood. Thin, knotty pickets and untreated pine give out faster than quality cedar.

How to get 15 to 20 years

  • Set the posts right. Deep, in concrete, with drainage. Steel posts last even longer than wood ones. This matters more than anything else.
  • Use quality cedar (see the best wood for a fence in North Texas).
  • Stain or seal every 2 to 4 years. This is the single biggest thing a homeowner controls. A water-repellent stain with UV protection slows graying, cracking, and warping dramatically.
  • Keep sprinklers off it. Irrigation hitting the boards daily rots them fast. Adjust heads so they do not spray the fence.
  • Trim back vines and shrubs that trap moisture against the wood.

A simple maintenance rhythm

  • Year 1: let new wood dry out, then apply the first stain or seal.
  • Every 2 to 4 years: clean and re-stain.
  • Each spring: walk the line, tighten or replace any loose pickets, and check posts for movement.

Stay on that rhythm and a cedar fence easily reaches the high end of its life.

When upkeep is not enough

If the posts are heaving or large sections are rotted, no amount of stain saves it. At that point, repair or replacement is the real question. We help you decide in should you repair or replace your fence, and cover the whole build in the complete guide to fencing in DFW.
